The last of the full-time FCC examiners was Joe Welsh at the
Philadelphia office. SK for many years now, but Joe was as nice and
friendly a guy as you'd care to meet. He was an active ham - I forget
his call. By the book, of course, but he wanted everyone to pass. ---

When you mentioned the "mean old cigar-smoking FCC examiner".. I had
to recall taking a test in NY city at 641 Washington St... The
examiners name was Nelson Finklemann, he presented a "mean" appearance
but was really a decent guy.. I had apparently been just at the point of
passing on a test, and as I handed in my paper, he quickly checked
it, and said "if I were you, I would look at question 14 again."..
Just a bit of "FCC" trivia...
