For all of it's faults (real or perceived) I always was fond of the original
Argosy. There was something about a $499 HF transceiver with a relatively
hot & quiet receiver and a good clean transmitter that was appealing.
(Somehow, despite the small additional cost for the digital display on the
525D Argosy II, the price being pushed about $500 -- $530 rings a bell --
made it less competitive, but I digress). If only... I could have sold a
lot more of those rigs If Only it had had 12 & 17 meter capability, even tho
the bands weren't available for amateur use at the time...
If I could talk Ten Tec into adding another HF rig to their lineup today
(and I will have a word with Scott, if I can squeeze into the crowd at the
booth over the weekend), I'd suggest taking the Argonaut V, changing the PA
to at least 50 W out -- and 100 or more would be better -- and call this new
rig the next Argosy [and continue to offer the Argonaut V, I might add!]
If it could be done for a reasonable additional cost -- $100 neighborhood --
and sufficiently well marketed, I think it would be a winner. If it could
be done, and if TT would be willing to do it... and if, if, if, if...

I have owned 6 or 8 TecTecs over the years plus a much larger and more
varied assortment of other brands. I think for simplicity and ease of
operation nothing has ever surpassed my Argosy. I hooked it to a vertical
and ran DX. I bought the little relay box was respectable with a small
Amp on 75 meters. It is a good basic mobile unit too....................
The thing is "The Brand Xers" have developed what they choose to call
"entry level" rigs . That is their terminology. I, would prefer to see
something akin to an updated Argosy. A basic rig or as some of us see it, a
decent little mobile rig. I think that an Argosy 2000 could be sold a
similar price point as the Brand X. I also believe that it's market share
at that price point would be higher than must people might estimate. Just
how important is cramming a lot of goodies in something very cheap &
small? I think the ham
