Though I'm a Ten-Tec fan, I find the IC-706mkII or mkIIG work
fine for me. I have two of them - one in the truck that works well on
both HF and VHF, and one in the shack that works as a VHF radio (and HF
backup). I'm not sure what you hear about them "having problems on
certain frequencies", but for an incredible amount of freq coverage in a
single package, I have to say it does a FB job for me. I run it to a
Hi-Q "screwdriver" type of antenna and it works very well. Broke an east
coast pileup to S9SS while mobile in N. Texas, but I think it was more a
matter of good timing than "overpowering them" - hi! I previously ran an
8' whip with a tuner, but the Hi-Q runs circles around it. Hope this is
useful.
