Bob,

You've been a great source of good info on this
subject (thanks!), I'd like to tie it back to Ten Tec
and make a point (owning both Ten Tec's and the
Duet's).

Transceivers have really advanced in the last 30
years, with Orion you don't need to sit through much
noise to enjoy a signal, and there is plenty of
sensitivity too. But I would venture that Orion does
not fare any better than my OMNI VI+ when the Duet is
running. That means your Orion sounds just like an old
FT101 used to sound, very noisy and with reduced
sensitivity because you have to reduce RF gain. This
is -after- Amidon. Ugh.

Thankfully, the XYL appreciates her new machine and
has adjusted her laundry schedule for times when I am
not on 20m (she knows when!). But heaven forbid that
anyone's neighbor buys one of these and they live
close.

Also really bad on 20m, the Sharper Image Ionic
Breeze. Orion will not save you from these. And what
is coming next that has a switcher in it?

It's getting harder and harder to be a ham, haven't a
clue what the FCC is doing these days to prevent RFI.

--------------------------

Check out the new QST and that Orion II teaser (page
23). Everyone zoomed in on that rainbow coming out of
the display, I just noticed that the ad does not say
"future planned high speed sweep scope" as we have
heard mentioned - it says "The new Orion II adds:
*Faster sweep scope with finer resolution". We'll be
interested to see if they ship that way from the
beginning. Also, the new higher resolution will
obviously also apply to the usual rig operations -
can't wait to see how that was implemented!

73,
Don

Basically the Whirlpool Duet and Maytag Neptune use
the same technology to control the motor.

Neither of the companies will do much if anything to
solve the noise problem. First, they don't perceive
it as a problem. If the machine washes then it's
doing what it's designed to do. They have enough
business keeping them doing just that. Anyway, both
designs came from Europe. And they make "like"
machines for other companies under names like Kenmore
etc. The issue of "quiet" refers to acoustic noise
while it's running. Nothing to do with it
electrically.

The solution today is for the user/owner to install
ferrite on the power cords, as close to the machine as
possible. Make as many turns as possible on/through a
donut.

Personally, if I had the problem today, I'd order a
couple of big donuts from Amidon, 2" OD x 1" ID x 1/2"
thick, put them on the power cord by winding several
turns and go back to hamming.
