Bill & company:

Very true, across the pond contacts can be made on 6 with a wire and 10 watts or so. Openings are at odd times an often brief, lasting from a few minutes to a few hours. Add a beam to the station and the openings will be useable for a longer period of time. Add some power to your station and you'll be able to work the folks that are using a transverter barefoot and a wire antenna.

If you can find a dedicated channel 2 TV antenna, 4 elements or so, add some wire loops to the ends to lower the frequency slightly, add a 4:1 balun and feed it with 50 ohm RG-8 foam coax. Lightweight, inexpensive and works. And if the neighbors question the antenna "hey, it's only a TV antenna".

Part of what Rich says is true, I have been running a dipole inside my attic
(about 30ft above ground) for the last couple of years. Also have a TT
transverter barefoot. Have worked into Centrail America and across the pond
to England. One must be monitoring the band when doing other things around
the shack. 6 will surprise you with odd openings which last onlt minutes.
Wires do work, but the beam will provide a bit more fun when there are
openings.

Rich,

6 meters is a band for a beam. Yes, you might make some contacts with your
wire antenna, however, most folks on 6 meters use a minimum of a 3 element
beam at 30 feet, providing both gain and directivity. You will become
quickly frustrated with the band using a wire antenna. Until the sporadic
e-season comes around in May 2006, most of what you will hear and work will
be ground wave signals. With your wire, you will be limited to working
folks
within a very short range 10-15 miles, max. Also, the low power output of
the transverter will not help either. Try to pick up a used solid state 6
meter amp such as the Mirage amps, 5 watts in/ 125 watts out. Put that
together with your beam and you will enjoy 6 meters year round.

73 and have fun,
Dave, K2DP, St. Louis
