That receiver is soooo good that the readings must be increased to leave
room for the weak ones that one couldn't hear with older, inferior
equipment. For instance a signal which is not even perceptible on older
equipment might need to read S-2 or S-3 on the Orion II. You can see how
S-meter readings would be quickly rendered meaningless as they all glumped
together.
