300-3000 Yes, we've heard it for many years.  But, as I listen to stuff
on the air, I find that extending the range beyond that does indeed help
intelligibility.  I'd submit that 300-3000 is closer to the minimum
bandwidth for comms, not the optimal bandwidth.

If energy below 350 hz or above 3000 is bad, why is FM broadcast radio
so much clearer & easier to understand than AM broadcast?  That extra
bandwidth adds some clarity.

Of course, the extra bandwidth in the receiver admits more noise so the
S/N ratio goes down.  That is fixed by narrowing the bandwidth and we
come back to 300-3000 approaching the limit before seriously
compromising clarity.
