I know you weren't looking to spend money.  Products
like the W3IHY or Romac equalizer and noise gate allow
you to monitor your transmit audio and shape it
accordingly.  

I think the Orion II allows you to monitor your audio
(mine has not come yet) if you want to spend some real
cash to do this.
