My impression is that NR filter adaption at the lower levels is faster than
it was in the Orion. Seems to me that a 1-2 setting on the Orion would
"stick" for quite a while, meaning that it was less obvious that re-adaption
was happening in between speakers, etc. And it would also take longer to
build the filters initially from an unadapted state.

I also agree that I don't really sense a significant difference between the
higher levels. The problem with running at the higher levels all the time
(at least on the Orion -- I haven't used it much on the II yet) is that you
can actually get more noise in between speakers (in SSB, obviously). At a
1-2 setting, this is less the case in the II, and my recollection is that
there was almost a "noise squelch" effect on the Orion because of the slower
adaption. Obviously, this didn't last forever, but the filters would
generally stay in place long enough to effectively bridge the silence gap
between speakers in a round table. Doesn't seem to be as much the case with
the new DSP code, but that isn't to say the NR isn't effective.

Wish I was wealthy enough to have kept both the Orion and Orion II on the
table -- hard to do a direct comparison between two things when you're
missing one of them :-)
