I should have mentioned that Bob, K4TAX, was absolutely correct in his 
broadcast chain to mike input methodology presentation.  My experiment 
-- by matching levels and impedances into the line level input of the 
rig through a pre-amp with a front end attenuator -- proves his point.

Thanks, Bob.  I'm redefining Hi-Z from now on :-) .
