I had a vaguely similar experience with my (now) 20 month old Orion. It just died on receive. I wasn't transmitting. Similar symptoms to yours with the red led - including all the green ones around cut/pbt/bw being dimly lit. There was also a narrow horizontal thin black band across the centre of the main display. As it was still just in warranty I took it back to the distributor. Having phoned ahead with the symptoms, they had a good idea of the fix as they had had a similar problem previously. It took them about 30 minutes to fix. I think they replaced a failed (burnt out) c somewhere (can't remember exactly now) I should think TT will know about it if it is the same problem or you could try here http://www.aoruk.com/

Think you are probably right Carl - at least hopefully -(it has gotten even worse now so looks very much like a regulator going kaput ) - but I just looked at the 81917A7 CPU/DSP regulator schematic and they are things I cannot get locally tomorrow and get them installed by 2pm so I guess I will set the O aside and hook up my TR7/R7.But maybe I can avoid a trip back to TT with it. Besides I am not looking forward to pulling the front panel again to get to those regulators!

It sounds like an internal voltage regulator is messed up to me. I would
check all the internal voltages from the regulators.

Any real Orion Gurus have any ideas - This afternoon I was working a guy
on
20 cw noticed the LCD display was blinking with keying . Tried changing
contrast etc etc no help. Looked at PS current - was under 20 amps key
down - power just under 100 watts . Tried into dummy load same LCD
flickering , same currents and power.

Tried other bands - no difference - Tried reducing power - no difference
in
flickering until under 16 relative power setting. Decided to check power
supply (ASTRON 35 M ) voltage drops under load and fuse and DC supply -
all
looked OK. less than half volt from 13.8 to 13.3 .

Turned off and mulled a bit - tried turning it back on and now it will not boot - treid doing a RAM clear - could faintly see battery message at top
.
OFF and ON and no difference will not boot. Tried a master reset - cannot
do
it.

When the thing comes on the red ALC LED lights dimly - - the SYSTEM
LOADING
message shows up dimly then fades out in about two or three contrast
steps
every 5 seconds - repeats - sometimes the Smeter will light up breifly , a relay clicks and it repeats but this is random. I might also note the LCD
display is sort of blue at turn on the goes to grey and black.

Any ideas for me tonight - ??? . It worked fine all weekend last weekend
in
CQWWPH.Worked fine all week on random qso's - all cw.

Looks like I am most likely back to my TR7 for CWSS.

???? Thanks _ Hank K7HP
