All the previous postings notwithstanding, I don't believe I've seen anyone
address one potential factor that could explain *some* of the different
responses to various firmware levels. As one who works daily with firmware
and hardware, either of which can be at various levels, maybe I'm more
sensitive to this. What is rarely addressed, and what we are actually not
equipped to define is, "what version is your hardware." On Orion I's, I
believe there could be a number of hardware levels, from those that are
original production run through all the incremental mods that were made
throughout the production of the rig. I sent mine in mid-last year to have
a problem fixed, and to have it "upgraded" to the latest level. That was
done, but I believe there were one or two mods made available after that
time. So, while we can debate what firmware releases cause or solve
problems, what we have no way of accurately defining is the hardware level
of our various Orion I's. Based on my experience in the high end server
computer field, the relevance of which is questionable, this can make big
differences. So, when we take absolute positions about symptoms caused by a
firmware level, I often question, based on the function involved, how
hardware version differences might affect the results on any particular
radio. For your consideration . . .
