Tonno: I sounds like there may be a problem in your radio. I am using my
Orion II with 2.037j in the 160 meter contest this weekend with NR and NB
with BW down to 100 Hz with no problem. Maybe reloading the firmware or a
master reset will cure the problem, but if not, you may have to send it to
the factory.
I am familiar with the S-meter problem. In most cases, you need to subtract
about 20 dB for signals showing more than +30, and add 2 S-units to signals
less than S-7. You can see the chart I made using an HP 8640B signal
generator at my website www.n6ie.com. This discrepancy is probably a result
of the new dual-loop AGC scheme in version 2, and can be fixed in the
firmware, or if Ten Tec wants to take a 'low tech' approach, by making a new
replacement face for the S-meter with the right calibrations. The could fix
the power output calibration on the meter that way too!

Subject: [TenTec] serious filter problem with Orion II
Hi,
that my 1st post here as a fresh OII owner. I am in the middle of the
first serious contest cqww160.
Already in the beginning of the contest OII developed a following problem:
Whenever I play around with BW control and go narrower than ca 200hz
filters seem to completely mess up and I start to here the band extremely
wide, getting tens of signals and strange noises like hash and cracks on
top of that. Basically as if I was hearing the whole band. I have to do
restart to get rid of this. This has happened a few times already not even
changing the BW but working at ca 300hz. IT comes like a wave taking about
5 sec maybe for the filters to completely lose themselves. I have had to
do ca 10 restarts and I try to avoid going narrower or BW at all.
Has anyone seen anything like that? Running 2.037j here and NR or AGC
settings, etc do not seem to matter.

p.s. having really hard time getting used to OII as it does not seem yet
in any way superior to my old trustworthy 95 vintage MP with all the mods
and filters. MP with INRAD roofing filter does not seem to be worse in any
way but is more quiet and signals are easier to copy in pileup. OII NR
causes distortion in signals and does not seem to improve S/N ratio, CW
sidetone is ringing and the volume seems to be not adjustable (?), S-meter
shows 59+60 for every decently strong signal:) I have gone through the 1
year of list archives about OII and tried to take all advice into account.
Hopefully will be able to get used to it finally.
