Steve,

You seem to be getting a 1-sided answer here - very US centric - and not
very helpful (although the effort is surely appreciated).

I can't speak for the total picture of "international" but let me give you a
European view, based on my 35 years of living here and buying in the states
all the time throughout that period.

PayPal is simply the best, but if you don't want to use it or can't, then:

Use "S.W.I.F.T." - the most widely used international money transfer system
(wire). It is used by businesses as well as private people to transfer
money safely and relatively fast between different countries.

Nearly all European and American banks are tied into the SWIFT system and it
is very easy to use - and most of us can execute the transaction from home,
using online banking.

I bought an OMNI VI+ a couple of months ago and wired the money directly
from my bank to the seller's bank in TN. I did this using my normal online
banking which I use daily (we have no checks over here anymore - died when
we switched to EUROs). The transaction took me about 5 minutes in total to
complete.

The wire took about 5 business days to fully complete.
I was charged 42 EURO (about $50) and the seller was charged $10 by his own
bank. I wired using "EXPRESS". If I had used "standard", it would have
been about $14 cheaper on my end, but taken about twice as long.

When I execute a SWIFT transfer, I only enter:
- Seller's name
- Seller's bank account number
- Seller's bank's "sorting number"
- Optional: a reason (e.g. "for Omni VI+)

I also have to enter some security-related stuff, which varies from bank to
bank - depending on the online banking system and software the bank and its
clients are using.

"Western Union": What in the heck is that? We never heard of it over here.
It is a very "US-centric" thing. Of course it is everywhere, and as someone
earlier pointed out, is probably the fastest way to move money
internationally, but it is a prime target for SCAMS and most people here
have no clue about where to find them or how to use them - which means they
may not trust them.

I RECOMMEND: talk to your European buyer. Most of us have bought lots of
stuff in the states and know what works best for both parties.

Other viable solutions:
- "Certified Bank Check", but it is only a little cheaper for the buyer,
takes several days to obtain, several days in the mail (could get lost) and
several days, if not weeks, to clear the seller's bank.

Especially for low cost stuff, a few hundred dollars or less, PayPal is in a
league of its own. Once the amount of the transfer approaches $1500 or
more, the cost of PayPal can exceed the cost of a SWIFT transfer.
