You asked, so here are my thoughts.
With a $2K budget for a new rig, you can have a really great system. Don't
forget the cost of optional filters and a power supply.
Now call Stan at TenTec and ask about the used OMNI VI and VI+ deals.
They're throwing in mikes, etc. You will be elated with either an Omni VI
Option 3 or an OMNI VI+. I have both and there's really no difference. By
all means, get a TenTec 961 or 962 power supply. They have the proper
protection for your new rig and its finals. Finally, select the filters
you want. You can do it all for less than $2000.
The Omni VI Opt 3 or + has a front panel that is easy to get used to.
Ergonomically great, in fact. You don't need a manual, but should read the
one TenTec will include.
There is a computer interface that works fine with logging programs.
If you operate CW, there is no finer QSK rig in the world.
This is a rig that you can grow with and that will last for a lifetime.
Let us know whatever your decision is

Hello all,
I have finally saved up some money and I am looking to upgrade from my
old
triton IV... I am considering several right now: FT-950, TS-2000, 746Pro,
Jupiter... I want to get the "best" radio I can for under 2K... I see TT
is
offering Omni IV factory upgraded to IV pluses for ~$1200... are these
worth
considering?? I have been licenced for about a year, and I am looking for
something reasonably priced (<2K) that will not give me problems and I
can use
for at least 2 years with out wnting more. My current modes of interest
are
SSB, PSK31, and RTTY... I am still learning code, so that will be a
future
interest...
I also have the option to hold off a bit longer and up my limit to
possibly get
a new OMNI VII...
I guess I am just looking for some honest opinioins... Where I live hams
with
newer rigs are pretty sparce, and with no stores within reasonable
driving
distance I will be buying blindly... i.e. no desk time in front of ANY of
the
radios I am considering....
My key requirements are
1) PC interface for logging
2) Quality... I don't want to keep woking on the radio or having it
repaired
3) Receive quality.... doen't have to have the best receiver, but don't
wnat to
get tired of listening to it.
4) Stand up to some contesting. I am not a hard core contester, but I
have
operating during a few contests and enjoyed it.
Any thoughts?
Lou
