Because a $100 2 meter rig won't work 6 meters. I think that's a pretty good reason to start with.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their input. I learned a lot, and I am
sure that anyone else lurking in the backround has too.

This is what I plan to do. I will unsolder the two diodes, and solder in
segments cut from a DIP socket. The kind with the nice round machined pins.
I will then have sockets so I will never need to work on the board with a
soldering iron again. This will allow me to try different diodes as plugins.
If I should fry some, all, I will need to do is remove the cover, and plug
in two more.

I could tape a small plastic bag with replacements inside the cover.

Any comments?
