Most stock / in radio speakers do not direct the sound toward the operator
but either upward or downward depending on speaker location. A separate
speaker directed toward the operator works much better in that one hears
direct sound as opposed to reflected sound that is augmented by the
acoustics of the room. In today's radios, there is no room on the front
panel for a decent size speaker location so the top or bottom of the metal
rattling box is next worst thing.

I agree with a few others on the speaker selection. My stock in the radio
speaker sounds sad and pinched. But i have a 8 inch Woofer in a box that i
use for a external speaker and it is much more pleasing to the ears. The
woofers audio specification range is listed as 38 Hz to 6Khz so it seems
like a natural selection for the radio. Jeff N3JBH
