Steve,
I thought about going that route, the stabilizer, and am aware of the
phase noise problem, however this is just a portable back pack,
emergency rig, and thought i'd try my hand at trying to work with the DDS.

As I understand it, the phase noise performance of a DDS is not as good
as a well-designed PTO. Would a better solution be to use a "huff &
puff" style stabiliser for the existing PTO? That way you get the
frequency stability and the low phase noise.
