I don't want to turn this reflector into an Elecraft reflector, but I do
feel the need to correct misinformation.

This may come as a shock to Orion owners, but nearly all firmware updates
to the K3 provide ADDED FEATURES and user controls, not fixes to the
previous firmware. Firmware updates are beta tested by experienced hams,
and are easily loaded into the radio. Not only that, but the chief engineer
(N6KR, principal of the company), the other principal, WA6HHQ, and the
softare/firmware engineer read the email reflector every day and respond to
posts when needed. Most of those firmware updates are the result of user
feedback requesting new features or improved user control.

Elecraft has announced (via their email reflector) an accessory to provide
this function. It's not on the price list yet, and is not shipping.
One of the many very nice things about the Elecraft radios is that they are
modular, and you can buy the modules that YOU want. This makes them less
expensive for most hams. For example, my K3 drives my Hercules II to full
power with only 10 watts, so if you have a Herc II, you could order the K3
without the 100W amp and tuner. I recently ran two major contests with the
K3/10 and the Hercules II. Leaving out the 100W amp saves $500, the tuner
$330. The second RX is $650, and is exactly the same as the primary RX. If
you don't need it, you don't have to buy it. AND, you can save 10-15% of
the cost by buying the K3 as a kit!
