With my learner's permit in hand, I wonder how you
tested output - CW... SSB ... or some more exotic
measure?
 
I am way past a "learner's permit"........BSEE with extensive RF 
experience......heh heh I tested it in both CW and SSB modes using keydown CW, 
pulsed CW and audio pulsation............the results were da' same..

Also what is the error tolerance (+/-) of the meter, I
have read some have as much as 10% variance +/-
and if so, it could be that you are getting 95 watts out
and reading only 85 ?
 
Good idea cept' I have multiple (3) Bird 43 wattmeters with 3 separate 
sensors............all read the same +/- 1 watt and have I further verified the 
RF power with an oscilloscope that has in place a current calibration sticker.

Also, when you tested, what was the load - antenna, or
dummy load, or can/do you test at a point earlier in
the system?   I am taking it that the "lab grade" 50 ohm
load is a high quality dummy load  (i.e., a known quantity)
 
As my initial E-mail stated in part: "Yet, when the RF output power is measured 
with a lab-grade 50-ohm load ..........."............I actually checked with 
two different lab-grade loads, not antennas!

I am not being critical...  just looking to learn and apply
