You might try the trick I did with my Scout. If the Argo V has conventional IF amp IC's, you can put a little positive bias on the AGC line to knock down the IF gain.

I find if I turn the attn on, then everything is down. I would have really liked to see a RF gain, or a way to turn the preamp off without turning the attn on.

And YES, this rig has a LOT of gain and I find it's not normally necessary for the lower bands. However, there are times when use of the pre amp will
help out on a weak signal, depending on your noise environment.
The receiver takes some getting use too. The high back ground noise will
drive you nuts and the only way I know of reducing it is to turn off the
pre-amp.
