I'd think that the side thrust from running a finger just under the knob
could be greater, and that if sometimes the hand griping the knob was
supported by the knob more than the arm muscles that the side thrust
would be greater than the weight of the aluminum knob. Both values are
hard to quantify.
I'm sure that mounting an outboard bearing inside the aluminum knob
would be no more difficult for a machinist than mounting a gear
reduction knob on a Collins 75A4 should encoder lift prove to be shortened.
