Hmm, if it sometimes works both ways, I would use high itensity light
and a magnifier to examine, (and then touch up) all solder joints in the
metering circuits. You may have a bad connection to the meter pivor
spring or coil, but more likely it could be the solder joing inside the
meter or the connections to the meter. Do you have a meter of same or
higher current rating that you could sub in the circuit just to see if
you get constant meter action in either SWR or S meter mode? It does
not have to be an exact match to the original meter, just have full
scale the same or higher, just to check that it is not a connection
inside the origiinal meter.
