I'm no expert, but I think you want to leave the counter on the bench.

Because the rig mixes signals, and uses the sum in some cases, and the 
difference in others...perhaps even the same rig, for different bands...You 
need a bit more "smarts" than simply tapping your counter onto the leg of a 
chip.

I still have 5 or 6 old Heathkit SB650 freq readouts for the old Sugar 
Baker/Hot Water lines.  Back then, it was like a friggin computer!  Large 
board loaded with chips....plug in no less....amazing that they still work!! 
But same thing, it had to take three frequencies from the rig, and juggle 
them to get a readout.  Probably all done with a single PIC these days.
