As much as it will allow you! Mine makes only about 16 Watts carrier if there is no audio. However, there is an interesting feature in the Orions where the carrier power actually increases as modulation increases, so the practical result is that you can get 100 Watts PEP, and 25 Watts carrier, but only for a few seconds, then it cuts down the power when stop talking. At any rate, the finals are rated for a lot more power than that, so it's safe any any level.

How much power can we run on the OII safely in AM mode?
Thanks,

There is a distinct difference in the monitor sound of AM vs. SSB that I
have noted for some time on the "Fix List" on my website. It sounds more
like the sample rates are different with AM getting the short-changed by a
few dozen kbps! I could be wrong about that, but they do sound different.
The good news is that the actual on-air AM audio is fabulous and is better
than some AM broadcast stations I have heard.

John,

Further to my earlier email, I ran some more tests, listening to
myself on
an external receiver (actually, an Argonaut V). The difference in
equalization between AM and SSB did not show up there; both sounded
fine
with TX
EQ set to 0 dB. However, the difference was still there on the
Orion
II's
internal monitor, with AM sounding more bassy than SSB by about 7
dB.
So,
it seems to be a monitor issue rather than a TX EQ issue. I don't
understand how and why that would happen, but there it is.
