[TenTec] lubricating OmniVI optical encoder?

The main optical encoder on one of my OmniVIs is quite stiff. I am
wondering if there is some way
to lubricate it. It turns, but not nearly as freely as one might wish
for. Yes, I loosened the knob completely in
hopes of the knob itself being the source of the stiffness.

Anyone?
