If the Orion sounded like crap, I bet he just had too tight a filter. You need 2400 hertz or wider for nice audio. And fast AGC would not sound good either.

It amazes me that so many people don't have a clue about these two items. There are far too many appliance operators today instead of the technicians that the FCC originally wanted.

best advise, ask someone that KNOWS how to set-up and operate a radio.

Another very new and strange technique........read the manual.

Hi guys - Just a brief observation... Stopped out to the local radio
club Field Day site... and lo and behold ... they had three big rigs set
up. A Yaesu FT-10000, an TEN-TEC ORION II, AND A TT OMNI VI - the two
TEN-TEC stations were complete with TT power supplies, speakers, a TT
tuner, and the like. Man it was a beautiful site...I mean sight...
either way works I guess, but it was a proud day.

One of the guys complained the Orion II sounded like crap. I told him
you cannot set it up like a Yae-com-wood. They said somebody who did
not know the rig had messed around with the menu settings and had it
sounding funny. I recommended they do a refresh re-boot and restore
the factory default settings, and start over - rather than debug what
they had done. Hope this was good advice...

We use an Orion II, a pair of Omni VIIs, and an Omni VI at our contest
station... and nobody every complains.

But it looked seeing all that TT gear out there !

Happy trails and good DX to ya.
