They sell those headsets Bob mentions all over eBay... cheap, fragile,
and not durable -but they sound OK. The electret condenser capsules in
nearly every computer type headset cheap headset costs less than $5,
retail, less wholesale, and that is the high end of the cost range.
I purchased a pile of cheap (less than $10 delivered) headsets on eBay
(including the one Bob mentions) and tested them in comparison to the
popular Yamaha CM500 headset and most were at least acceptable and
usable. Not particularly well made or durable, but usable. I gave the
better ones to the contest station I play at, as backup sets in case the
main ones fail during a contest - and this has happened already - so
they will get used on occasion.

If it didn't work it would be total junk. I
would expect parts to fly around the room should I drop the headphones
on the floor. I've never seen the likes of molded plastic snapped
together. This goes to show that one doesn't have to spend a hundred
bucks or so for a name-brand headset that works.
