Dave,You are right on. The idea of incentive licensing was to promote a higher level of radio knowledge, but I guess that was lost. Now the tests are made to get as many people on the air as quickly as possible. Somewhere down the road we will all pay for this easy entry. I am 76 and I will also be out of the way soon. 73 de Art WA8VSJ----- Original Message ----- From: <d.e.warnick@comcast.net> To: "Discussion of Ten-Tec Equipment" <tentec@contesting.com> Sent: Saturday, June 15, 2013 11:22 AM Subject: Re: [TenTec] Brand Loyalty Time for one of my favorite rants.I miss the novice bands. It's not about CW vs. Phone. It's about giving new hams a set of frequencies with reduced privileges where new hams and experienced hams could be sure to connect. I learned a lot from the old timers on those novice bands with reduced power, before I was allowed to move on to everywhere. Many of us earned our stripes there and learned to listen and operate correctly.I wish we could go back to an entry level license. It could be SSB if you like, but limit power and frequency availibility for a mandatory year. Say 100 watts on the old novice CW frequencies and a matching set of phone frequencies on 80, 40 & 15. A place for new guys to get their feet wet. Yes, there would have to be tolerance and Elmering by those of us who are now old timers. We've dummied down our tests and then opened up the whole world to those who are not ready for that. It's not the fault of the new guy who hasn't learned. The FCC took away the training groundJust my rant. That's OK, I'm 69 and will go away in time Thanks for the bandwidth .Oh, yes, Bob. I loved the story. You always have great input and info. Maybe there is something to having been at it a long time. And I am happy with the audio on my Omni VII & Orion II & still learning from others73 Dave WA3F ----- Original Message ----- From: "Reed Krenn" <reed.krenn@gmail.com> To: "Discussion of Ten-Tec Equipment" <tentec@contesting.com> Sent: Saturday, June 15, 2013 9:49:49 AM Subject: Re: [TenTec] Brand Loyalty I think I'll go buy a new computer so my emails will look better..... He was using his Omni VII and a 705 mike and dipole antenna. One day he announced to the group that he had sold his Omni VII and had purchased a brand XX/model radio. {The actual brand & model is notimportant here.} Over the next two weeks he used the new radio on the air.The "rag chew" group made clear and definitive statements that the new brand XX radio had much better audio than the Omni VII. He "settled" on thesuggested adjustments that were offered for that model and continued dailyto join in the "rag chew" sessions. Frequently he was honored with thecomment "that new radio sure sounds better than the Omni VII" type reports. After two weeks, he couldn't stand the pressure and announced to the group"well fellows you are all full of crap, as I've been using the same Omni VII, same mike and same antenna for the past two weeks. There has been andis no new radio". Many of the fellows were totally embarrassed and grosslyhad proverbial "egg on their faces" as they had boldly and lavishly complemented the "alleged new radio" and its audio quality. Frankly, being in on the joke from the start and hearing these exchanges, when he disclosed the prank, I laughed until I thought my trousers would need laundry service. I suppose this goes to somewhat prove that folks give reports seemingly based on radio model and brand and not of actual and accurate signal evaluation. In other words, they aren't capable of hearing and reporting any real or significant difference, although they claim to hear dramatic improvements when indeed there were none. The general word is "HYPE" that feeds one's ego. 73 Bob, K4TAX----- Original Message ----- From: "Richards" <jrichards@k8jhr.com>To: "Discussion of Ten-Tec Equipment" <tentec@contesting.com> Sent: Friday, June 14, 2013 5:57 PM Subject: Re: [TenTec] RF Speech Processor > Personally, Gary, after reading your comments over the past couple of > years, and reviewing your setup procedure, I am confident you have managed > to ring the most out of the rig and processor, pushing it to the max, > while maintaining a narrow, clean, and intelligible signal. > _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list TenTec@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/tentec _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list TenTec@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/tentec_______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list TenTec@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/tentec _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list TenTec@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/tentec _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing list TenTec@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/tentec |
