Back in the prre-internet days I had a rig (210x) that was a gem for mobile,
also a plugin consol at home. In QST there was a fellow advertising as a
specialist in those Atlas Rig, I wrote to him, then I sent the rig, then the
diagnosis and yes, only $50 would be enough. Sent in the $50 and that was the
last I heard of the fellow. Then I complained to the "authorities" and it
turned out that thiss guy was a hoarder of Atlas gear and also rip off folks.
The NY criminal system would put him away - completed forms, affidavits , etc.
hoping to see my rig in the mail one day. I never heard from the criminal
justice system either.
Now we are in better shape because we can query this reflector to see if there
are any complaints. Plus on ebay there are ratings for experienced sellers.
The one clue in the whole deal suffered was when the seller asked for payment
to be sent to a third party. That should have set off alarms. On the other
hand of someone says "my wife handles the cash" that should also be an alarm.
Let him endorse the check at his QTH.

I was the vic of one of these scams. we must remember we are in a new era of
dishonesty now and its buyer beware. that money may have been sent to a us
address but I assure you it is now in a 3rd world country. there is no
recourse and the police really can do nothing in this situation!
if there is cash involved then buyer beware if you still want to deal then be
very diligent with the other side in checking things out and still there is a
chance to be ripped off. I have probably done 100 deals and finally got hit
big time but best to put it in the past and move on and learn.
