Tnx Martin.

I'm still looking for suggestions of what I would do with this.
Everyone keeps telling me I must get a Pan-Adapter but when I ask why, there
seems to be a shortage of reasons.

I had one back in the 60's and then I knew why.  Most of us had one when we
switched from AM to SSB, so that we could properly adjust our SSB signal and
make sure we were linear.  It was all about looking in the mirror, not at
the other guy.

My ham "on the air" operation is primarily just contesting, but only major
contests, and then rag chewing, mostly SSB on 80 and sometimes 40.  It's
rare that I use a higher band except for contests.

I think in that regard the software plays as big a part as the hardware, so
your choice of software will possibly govern what you can or want to do.
Fortunately most are free so you can try or use several. Perhaps fiddling
with the various bits of software might give you some insight into what you
would like to achieve and the likely ability to do so. 
Then spec your hardware to suit.
