Diagrams for simple switching transistor CW and FSK interfaces are in the
N1MM and WriteLog manuals. Also there is coverage of this on AA5AU's
excellent RTTY website:

http://www.aa5au.com/rtty/fsk-interface/

For audio from receiver to computer see:

http://www.aa5au.com/rtty/getting-started-on-rtty/page-03/

K9YC also has written on this in his in-depth article:
http://www.k9yc.com/HamInterfacing.pdf

Audio interconnections start on page 7.

All that is needed for CW and FSK transmit are 3 inexpensive NPN general
purpose switching transistors (2N2222s work fine) and 3 1K resistors.

Even if you use a commercial interface this is good information on what is
going on "under the hood".

For FSK I use a 3 transistor interface from a serial port to the Orion.
One transistor is used for CW keying and the other for FSK, the third is
the PTT transistor needed for FSK. I think the specifics were in the
N1MM contest logging program documentation.

Use pretty pretty much any simple switching type transistors and a few
other small parts, resistors and diodes. Too easy to not work.

debate on the pros and cons of RTTY using FSK or AFSK. I learned RTTY some
45 years ago on the old machines and was brought up on FSK so that is what I
wish to stay with. My debacle is this. For several years now I have had two
rather expensive interfaces that I have used (two of the same make and
model). The first one failed as a result of a nearby lightening strike and
the second just failed because (you fill in the blank). I am tired of
getting a second mortgage for a piece of equipment. What products in use
seem to be most popular? I do want something that will allow mw to use CW
and RTTY. I am not interested in the other various digital modes at this
time although I would guess that they all do most of the same things. Maybe
I will need a second mortgage after all.
