Yeah, they really are a pain...
I found that a well focused heat gun works best to melt the solder on all of
the pins, then I snap the board against the edge of my work bench to fling the
melted solder out of the holes. The encoder will often come out with the same
fling but will certainly come out with gentle tugging.
