Yes, I am one of those described in Rick's post and guilty of holding the hobby
back.  Stated by someone that owns an ICOM 7800, TT Orion1, and others.  There
is a market for cheap radios and that's why the big companies continue to make
and sell them.  Most of the Hams using them wouldn't know transmitter noise or
distortion from a hammer nor do they care.  There are too many variables in the
causes for band noise, a great deal of the noise on SSB today is caused by the
person within the headset.  I also read here this week about how awful the User
Interface is on some of the Flex Radios, ( I am former owner of 6300, 5000 and
3000) well that issue was largely solved on the earlier rigs with use of the DJ
Panels which provided 2 large VFO knobs and more knobs than you could shake a
stick at.  One of the absolute worst user interface radios is the Elecraft
brand.
