I bought one of these USB to 1/8 inch phone plug cables for my Argonaut II from RT Systems.  I managed to get it to work with my N3FJP logging program with the Omni VI parameters by setting the speed to 1200 Baud, and the device number to 40h.  I suspect that it would work just fine with an Omni VI.

I believe there is a CIV jack on the back of the Omni VI.  The Omni VI uses the Icom command set and all you need is a USB to CIV converter. Search for one online.  That's a much simpler hookup.

Hello,

My Omni VI opt. 3 is hooked up to my old Dell Laptop (new in Dec 2000).  I use that connection almost entirely for logging.

It’s about time I retire that old laptop, but newer computers don’t have those old wide connections any more (I didn’t look up the name for those thingees);  I assume that I’ll probably have to work through a USB port.

What it needed to go from the Omni VI opt 3 to a USB port and a good working connection to the computer?  If this is old hat stuff, as opposed to Red Hat stuff, feel free to just point me in the right direction….

You'll need a USB to serial adapter.  Something like this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5866899&SRCCODE=3WGOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE&scid=scbplp7378756&sc_intid=7378756&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SC%20Shopping%20-%20Brands%2FNumbers&utm_term=4581458795429691&utm_content=All%20Products<http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5866899&SRCCODE=3WGOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE&scid=scbplp7378756&sc_intid=7378756&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SC%20Shopping%20-%20Brands%2FNumbers&utm_term=4581458795429691&utm_content=All%20Products>

I would think the cable that's used to connect the rig to the Dell laptop will work with an adapter like this.  If not, the pinout for the cable is in the Omni VI manual.
