Check one of the ionosondes if you live in North America. The band
conditions are iffy at best many days of this low cycle. Check for the
maximum usable frequency and see if it is just a poor ionosphere you are
hearing on your dipole.
a Central US ionosonde shows its graphs of soundings at the Texas Army
Mars web site; Look for Space Weather link. This sounder is literally
in the mid Texas area, about a city block from my location.
It pings a sweep every few minutes, and has 4000 watts. Reflections of
its signal tell the height of ionized layers, (if any) at a given time.
Data for current day, day before, etc. is also plotted.
