OK John

It's years since I had anything with XP on it so I can't remember how
things work.

However, if it's similar to current versions ie W10, you can check your
computer com ports by right clicking on the start menu and then going into
device manager.

Or you may have to get into device manager another way.

Once in device manager, amongst the extensive list you will find Ports (Com
& LPT). Click on that and it will show you the com ports that are
connected. If you are correct Com 3 should indicate that it is a USB serial
port.

You then click on that and click on the settings TAB. You then need to set
it to 57600.

Then in the TenTec flash update utility you need to check that in settings,
the serial port selected corresponds and that serial port not ethernet is
ticked.

You do not mention what type of serial to USB converter you are using.
These days only those with a built in FTDI chip will definitely work so
your O2 may not actually be communicating with your laptop even if you set
the baud rate correctly. I found that recently when an old serial to USB
convertor I had used previously with an O2 would no longer work and I had
to change to an FTDI one. They are easy to find on eBay.
