As one that has repaired many radios for others over the years , I find that radios which sit on the shelf on in a box "being saved" are simply deteriorating in the box or on the shelf. Make it a point to power up and use these items at least once a month.   If you aren't going to do that, then sell it or give it to some deserving person or organization.   Your local radio club is an example and have them sell it with proceeds to the club. There's tax advantages to all concerned.

The radios are just like your emergency power generator.  If not started and used at least once a month, when you really need its service, it likely won't start.

Modern radios are more and more complex.   Typically this occurs as demands for features and options from users are passed along to the companies.  If one isn't going to use the "latest and greatest" radio every day and keep abreast of the features and options and how they are used, then perhaps you really don't need a "bragging rights" radio.    Where as, I find,  a more basic radio is better suited for the casual user.

While it may be impressive to have 15 transceivers and amps on the desk, do you really need these?  Are you able to effectively and efficiently operate these?   I seriously doubt it.

For the typical ham, one or two transceivers and associated accessories is more than adequate.  And with these one can keep and use them on a regular basis with a high level of operator efficiency.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Seems like it would be wise for me to keep

ringing on the CW filters - I have 500hz and 250hz in both IF's. I never
noticed ringing in the first place, so the roofing filter just made
performance a bit better. I agree with those about ease of operation.
With my FTDX5k it is a little irritating to have so many options.
Plug the 6+ in and go. Guess I should hook it up so the electrons won't
forget how to act.

It would seem like I am advertising my OMNI6+ on this list but I have not
seen any listed on QTH or ebay lately for pricing. Right now am using my
OMNI6+ as backup to my FTDX5000MPL, so it sits on the shelf all the time
and does not get used. Fully loaded with filters, roofing filter, no
scratches, etc. For what I have seen a long time ago, I would think it is
worth more to me than letting it go - especially since I am 90% CW
operator.

You better use it or you?ll lose it! Hihi
Probably the hardest thing on a radio is not using it. I got a Orion and
put the Omni VI on the shelf . Well it happen A9 board caps gone bad in the
Orion . No big deal ordered caps got down Omni. Power up and no vfo .Ok
case off unplug and plug a few connectors and where back going just in
time for our 160 gathering. About ten mins in radio starts acting up . A
tap on top back going , 5 more minutes all stop!
Spent the rest off night cleaning those pins. Backup and working fine
caps came in and again Omni goes on shelf. 8 months or so Orion down again
bad pin connections put Orion on bench to clean all pins upfront. Get down
Omni (no work) same as last time . Cleaned pins and back going again . AH
As far as worth in there day they where a fine radio (leading edge dsp)
but there time has gone. You can pickup a IC 7300 for under $1000 used I
bought for $600 . And no I would not give $600 for a Omni. Just seen a Ten
Tec VII sell for $600 about two weeks ago . I sold a Orion for $660 . The
radio market is saturated with old radios . Even the high end radios have
been coming down. And then the virus thing hit!

Hi Doug,

I have a Omni VI+ that needs some repair (a couple unstable LOs) so I had
the same question as you did, assuming I can find the problem. I'll be
interested to follow the answers.

I bought the 6+ I am now using for $400 including power supply, filters &
manual. It was an estate item at a hamfest a year or more ago and is very
clean. I think that is a bottom dollar price for your reference. If you
are
a CW guy, add the Inrad roofing filter kit and you just can't do much
better on CW, plus it is just fun and easy to use. You will regret
selling
it. A question for the group, when I added the CW roofing filter kit it
seemed to greatly reduce ringing when using the narrow IF filters. Has
anyone else noticed that?

Should have read closer, you have the roofing filter. Have you noticed a
decrease in ringing using the narrow IF filters?

Before parting with your Omni VI may I suggest you consider one thing.
Omni VI not only its attributes as a receiver with unsurpassable QSK
but how it sounds on air? CW to others.
When Japanese transceivers became popular in? the '60's they were
primarily intended for SSB? with CW as an appendage and remember the
FT101 reviewed as such.? Things have changed since then but I still
maintain Japaese rigs do not in any way compare in purity of CW note?
(imo Icom worst) with TT or Elecraft'
I regularly check my O6 on air keying via a SDR in PA and it is second
to none.
