EWE's work best over very good soil or even better yet over a
ground screen.
They are really just two verticals fed with crossfire phase.
The "flat top wire" is a non-radiating transmission line when the
antenna is installed over good ground.
Model an EWE as a closed loop, and you will see it also works
that way. All of the antennas you mentioned work on the same
principle.
