Hi Don,
W8JI's receiving antenna page provides excellent insight into the
relative performance of various receiving antenna options, especially
the RDF tables.
http://www.w8ji.com/receiving.htm
The Shared Apex Loop Arrays (SAL-20, SAL-30) are not listed,
their RDFs are in the order of 8-9 dB. Many topbanders have
had good success with the SAL-30 in a very small space .
There's a similar RDF chart on the Hi-Z web site that includes some
of the Hi-Z antennas.

W8JI's webpage has an excellent description of arrays of small verticals :
http://www.w8ji.com/small_vertical_arrays.htm
4-square arrays provide several dB improved RDF compared to loop
arrays, for example the 4 element Hi-Z array RDF is in the order of
11-12 dB. To do much better you would need to go to a much larger
monoband eight element vertical array such as the Hi-Z 8 (200 foot
diameter on top band).

Subject: Topband: receive antenna opinions
Dear Group
I have hit the limits of my antenna's and have come to the realization I
am more TX than RX, which I guess is the norm for the topband and 80m.
Anyway am considering putting a second receiver in my K3 and putting up
a receive only antenna.
Things that I have been looking at are as follows
The shared alex loop array either a SAL 20 or 30
The other is the Hi-Z system either the 3 or 4 antenna receive system.
I do not have the acreage for a beverage system but I have room for one
of the above.
So I wish to get opinions and pros & cons as I have learned its better
to learn from others on what did or did not work well or what
compromises they made as once you spend the money you can not get it
back and you have to live with your choices.
Thanks in advance for all your help and advice.
