nice condx first night here in ARRL 160m contest. In the first 3 hours from 5
UTC I worked 130 stations NA. The second night only 70. So, 200 QSOs from EU
is for me a non expected result.
I had a lot of fun.

Despite a minimal antenna with high local noise and around 50 watts, I worked
the following patient DX in the contest:
DX: ZF9CW, KP4AA, PJ2T, AA7JV/MM & VP5M.
Got on to hand out a few Qs to contestants while watching 6 for UT1FG/MM. No 80
or 160M antenna. Stations went in the log, I set a goal of 50. Then 100....
Forgot how fun and challenging 160M can be. Plan a better set up next year.

MM in the Pacific from about 1400 miles west of Panama (in DJ76), I could
hear EU, including R3 stations quite well.
No man-made noise here, except my own.

I worked AA7JV/MM in the 160 contest. N1MM balked at entering 2 in the section
field but a flag said to place an "R" in front of the number and N1MM logged
the QSO.
I tried submitting my 160 log to ARRL and got an error "copied exchange
(itureg) is missing". What should the proper exchange format so the ARRL robot
will accept my log?

Another important point -- there was a LOT of "selective fading" both
nights; I'd call someone on a peak, he'd respond, and by the time I
responded with my exchange, I was in the mud. Same when stations called
me. GOOD operators stuck with it, less experienced ones gave up,
thinking the other op was a lid.
Tutorial info: this fading is the low frequency version of "picket
fencing" that VHF and UHF mobiles experience -- it's due to the peaking
and cancellation as the signal arrives over two paths, and are varying
degrees of in and out of phase. The only difference is wavelength, which
changes the time interval of the fading.
Being a great op is FAR more than being fast -- understanding how radio
works is equally important.

There may be a disconnect between N1MM and the ARRL Robot. I had the same
experience. The .log file output from N1MM creates the log with nothing in that
field even though it prompts for the "R" when logging. The ARRL robot wants an
"R#" entry. I manually edited the .log file by adding the R2 and the robot was
pleased.

Here at VE6WZ I worked 9 EU on Sunday night. Saturday was rather poor.
Trans-polar signals had tremendous deep and fast QSB making QSOs a challenge,
but those I called had good ears.
Logged CT3, DL, G, HA, LY, OM, SM, UA and YL.
John SM5EDX had a tremendous signal for over an hour, with only modest QSB.
DR5X also strong at times.
I heard UY0ZG with an excellent signal, for at least 3 CQ cycles, he gave me
QRZ? and then he faded into oblivion.
My RBN skimmer spotted numerous EU, which only happens when signals are good.
I was only casually participating in the contest, and called CQ a few times to
see if I could raise any other EU, but became overwhelmed by NA callers even
with all of my RX at Europe. All NA and Carib were strong including EC.
The morning sessions had many strong JA, a few HL and DU, but only heard one VK
that called me after a JA QSO, but it was not my QRG.

Oh, interesting. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that since this contest uses
ARRL Sections as the scoring basis and DX sends only the RST and nothing more,
that no entry in that field in the log file was the likely correct answer and
that assumption was reinforced by N1MM NOT outputting the R2 to that field in
the .log file. I may have a bust, but it certainly won?t be the only one.

Actually - it doesn't matter.
The message from the "robot" is just information - the QSO is still in the
log and will be handled either with or without something after the 599.
