To add to Lee's comments, in fact the QTH I was using was far away from
Vientiane, in the countryside, and quiet. But as he notes, RX was an issue
for me. It was as if there was one-way propagation, the west coast could
hear me, I struggled to hear them. It was better on 80, but still while I
was loud across the entire US, it was work to pull out calls for me. It
was the subject of a K9LA webinar.
Lee was gracious and donated an 8 element Hi-Z array. I also had a
beverage to the US. I had the best of everything.
My last operation from there was December 2017. It was a case of
diminishing returns. I had a sense it was my last visit so I brought the
Hi Z electronics back with me and have used them in other locations like
ET3AA. The vertical elements are still at the farm in XW. Unfortunately,
my host passed away and the QTH is no longer available. This is not to
discourage anyone else from trying. The hunt itself was worth the time and
effort.
