Interesing to follow this useful thread, and I have found
the method described by John W0UN <broz@csn.net> to be the
most reliable.
A difficulty I have experienced is in mixing PL259 connectors
with various devices that use the matching SO239 socket.
Suppliers in New Zealand may source connectors from US
manufacturers or from Japan. Sometimes I find a US made PL259
does not make a good tight connection with a Japanese made antenna
(2m vertical) or switch.
Sometimes I get a poor fit between Japanese PL259s and US made
equipment (SB1000 or MB-VA tuner)
Is this just a random problem, or is there some difference in the
thread pitch or length between US and Japan manufacturers?
The problem can be described as a joint where the outer shell
is tight, but the coax can still be moved.
