I just talked to K5GHK in Monroe, LA (an old friend of mine from back in the
mid '50's. Although Ernie (K5GHK & a Microwave & other types Tower
Installer) was working on another tower miles away, he confirmed that the
tower did indeed, repeat, DID INDEED fall within 70' of the base. Work was
being done at 200' when the mishap occurred, killing one, injuring another; a
third jumped/partially thrown from nearly 200' into a marshy, muddy bean
field (thank goodness for recent rains) and is in good condition after being
"dazed". Apparently, the tower basically just collapsed down on itself;
therefore the 70' area for the tower wreckage is the accurate figure.
Investigators are sifting through the mess to offically determine/report the
incident.
