As for getting the big rods down easily.....

But really folks.... If you're not in a great hurry, a hose left slowly
watering the area for a few hours (really slowly) will get the soil into
shape to easily pound that rod down quickly. No one says it must be done
into bone dry soil. After a soaking rain is a great time to do this stuff too.
Standing on a ladder as I do... as a five foot six inch giant.... is only
for the first few swings. As long as you're not into a rock field it's more
a mental problem than a physical one.
