Dennis, I've seen anodized aluminum antennas but they were all TV jobbers -
not ham antennas. I have a KT-34A in the back yard (well half of it is in
the back yard, the other half has been installed on the T.I.C. RotorRing).
It was originally purchased in 1996. It, too, has silicon rubber glopped
all over it to keep water from getting into the capacitors. It is NOT
anodized. I scrapped/cut the silicon rubber off and redid all the joints
with Penetrox A.
Your engineer friend may have been trying to act important when he made the
statement... dunno. Howsomever, I really don't think he knows as much as
he puts on. I've never seen aluminum turn black because it was scrapped!!!
