Common rebar today is 60,000 PSI or Grade 60. This rebar is hard to
weld, even tack welds will break loose. You can get weldable grade
rebar, but it is not normaly stocked at the fabricator, and may
require a special mill order (if you want to buy enough 'tons' of
it). Even when this rebar is welded, welders usually need the mill
test reports of the rebar for the chemical analysis.
The weldable ASTM A706 rebar may be found at misc metals shops where
they do weld rebar to plates, etc.
Heating the bars will weaken it.
