There's a big archive from about a year ago, but the most astute suggestion
I ever saw was from W3LPL, I think.. He suggested that you pick a sunny
day, ascertain the local sunrise and sunset times from the paper or packet
cluster, exactly split the difference, and at that precise time look at the
shadow cast by your tower. The bearing of the shadow will be true north.
You can then select an appropriate reference point and NEVER have to go
through this again.
