Rick
I am using just such a combination with the following observations
The "Good News". Your TS850 will likely tune the C3S just fine on 12 and
17. I say likely because there are certain impedances that the 850 wont
match. Since the C3S does not present a 50 ohm load to the coax on 12/17,
the feed point impedance your 850 sees will be different depending on the
length of the coax feeding the C3S. If you find the 850 is unable to match
a the C3S on a given band then add (or subtract) 5' of coax and try again.
In my case the TS-850 will match the C3S on 12/17 just fine, for that
matter it matches the C3S on 30M, 40M, 80M and even 160M. Is it an
efficient radiator on those other bands ..... not likely.....which brings
me to..........
The "Bad News". The C3S is not that great an antenna (in my opinion) on 12
and 17 either. On 17M my C3S which is mounted at 40' plays no better in on
the air reports than my ground mounted Butternut vertical. On 12M the
performance is even worse, my Butternut consistently outperforms my C3S on
12M by at least 2 S units. So while the C3S is advertised as a12/17M
antenna in practice its not a very good 12/17M antenna, Because I am
serious about the WARC bands I then designed a home brew 4 element beam
(2-12 / 2-17) using a single feed similar to the C3S. This antenna is
mounted 7' below and at right angles to the C3S to minimize coupling. Even
at a height of only 33' this antenna out performs the C3S by 4 S units on
12M and 2 S units on 17M.
Caveat Emptor, individual results may vary, please consult your local Elmer
for more specific advice. If extreme performance anxiety results try to
remind yourself "this is only a hobby".
