The Ufer Ground (named after George Ufer
who is credited with creating it) ties the rebar
in the concrete tower base etc into the [tower]
ground system. It may be the rebar in the
foundation of your house (Nevada, as an example,
requires rebarred concrete foundations and Ufer
grounds for homes built after a certain date), etc.

This adds more dissapation capability to the ground
system. A Ufer Ground should never be used by its
lonesome, however. Obviously, creation of a Ufer
Ground must be accomplished prior to creation of the
tower base.

During WW2, Mr Ufer was tasked with creating a protection
system for buildings (Quonset huts and other types) storing
ammunition in Arizona, where lightning is a major issue during
the summer. Because the soil is not all that conductive, he came
up with the idea of tieing the rebar into a grounding system. The
rest, as they say, is history.

For more information on this subject, ask Steve K7LXC for one
of his very informative booklets or Steve Davis at DavisRF will
be glad to sell you the book by PolyPhaser "The 'Grounds' for
Lightning and EMP Protection."
